# Tracking competitors

> Compare your position against competitor domains on the keywords you track.

**Tracking → Comparison** puts your position side by side with each competitor's, on every keyword you track.

## The table

One row per tracked keyword, and one column per domain:

| Keyword | Your Position | competitor-a.com | competitor-b.com |
| ---------------- | ------------- | ---------------- | ---------------- |
| seo tools | 4 | 2 | 11 |
| rank tracker | 12 | — | 3 |
| backlink checker | — | 7 | 5 |

**Your Position** is highlighted to separate it from the competitor columns. A dash means that domain didn't rank in the top 100 for that keyword — for you or for them.

The columns are the competitors configured for the project. Add or remove them with **Manage competitors** in the header, which opens the [Competitors](/competitors/add) page.

The table scrolls horizontally when you track several competitors, so the keyword column stays usable.

## Reading it

Three patterns are worth scanning for:

**Rows where you're dashed and they aren't.** They rank, you don't. These are the clearest content gaps — the keyword is winnable enough that a competitor won it.

**Rows where everyone ranks and you're last.** The market is competitive and you're in it, just behind. Usually an optimization problem rather than a content one.

**Rows where only you rank.** Either you own a genuine niche, or the keyword isn't commercially interesting enough for anyone else to target. Check the search volume on the [keyword card](/tracking/add-keywords) before celebrating.

## How the data is collected

Competitor positions come from the same rank check as your own, on the same schedule — they're read out of the same search results page, not looked up separately. That means comparisons are always same-day and same-market: identical keyword, location, language, and search engine.

It also means a competitor added today has no comparison data until the next [rank check](/tracking/overview) runs. Add competitors at [project creation](/projects/add) to have them in the first collection run.

## Empty state

**No comparison data** — "Add competitors and track keywords to see ranking comparisons" — with an **Add Competitors** button. You need both sides: tracked keywords *and* at least one competitor. A project with keywords but no competitors shows this too.
