# Local locations

> Add your Google Business listing and choose the grid it's searched from.

A **location** is your Google Business listing plus a grid of points around it. Every local keyword is searched on Google Maps from each point of its location's grid. It's also what your plan counts as a local location.

## Add a location

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find your listing">
    On [Local SEO](/local/overview), click **Add Location**. Search for your business by name and town — for example `Austin Plumbery Austin` — and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> or the search button.

    Pick your listing from the results. Surnex recognises your business in every search by its Google listing, not by its website, so a business without a website tracks the same way. Searching for a listing doesn't use any allowance, but it needs an active plan, and isn't available on the sample project.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it (optional)">
    The name defaults to the listing's title. Give it your own — `Downtown branch` — if you track several.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the grid">
    **Grid** — `3 × 3`, `5 × 5` (the default) or `7 × 7` points.

    **Distance between points** — `0.5`, `1` (the default), `2` or `5` km.

    The panel shows how many points that is and how far across it reaches. Your listing sits at the centre.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Click **Add Location**, then add keywords at it. Nothing is searched until it has keywords.

## Choosing a grid

Match the grid to how far your customers travel:

* **A walk-in business in a city** — a small spacing, `0.5` or `1` km. Rankings change block by block.
* **A service-area business** — a wider spacing, `2` or `5` km, to cover the area you serve.

A bigger grid shows more of the map but costs more searches: each keyword is searched once per point, so a `7 × 7` grid is 49 searches per keyword per check against 9 for `3 × 3`. Scheduled checks are covered by your plan's locations rather than a monthly allowance — see [Usage and limits](/billing/usage).

## Edit a location

Click **Edit** on a location to rename it, re-draw its grid, or pick a different listing. None of these uses another location. A changed grid applies from the next check.

## Locations without a listing

A location created before listings were supported has no map pin. It shows **No listing — searched once for the whole area**, and each keyword is checked once for its market rather than across a grid. Click **Pick Listing to Track a Grid** to find its listing — the location keeps its keywords and history.

## Limits

* One location per listing in a project — adding the same listing again is refused.
* Up to **10** keywords per location.
* Your plan sets how many locations the organization can hold, across all projects. When they're all in use, **Add Location** is disabled. Remove one to free it; see [Plans](/billing/plans).

Removing a location deletes its keywords and their history, and frees it on your plan straight away.
